2018 Summer Industrial Engineer Internship

The Doe Run Company's Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Division (SEMO), located near Viburnum, MO (in the heart of the Mark Twain National Forest), is responsible for locating and extracting lead ore. The work takes place far below Earth's surface, some 1,000 feet beneath the forested hills of southern Missouri. This area, rich in mineral deposits, is known as the Viburnum Trend.  Named for the nearby town of Viburnum, mining and milling has taken place here for more than 40 years. While best known for having high-purity lead ore, SEMO also extracts zinc and copper minerals from its underground mines.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the internship students will have a clear understanding of the Industrial Engineering profession as it relates to the mining and milling industry in general and Doe Run in particular.  Students will come away with solid experience in the field, especially in the area of equipment efficiency, timing, ergonomics and other logistical improvements. 

Work Plan

  • Site Specific Environmental and Safety Training
  • Assignment of an individual project in which results will be presented by intern to the executive and leadership team
  • Overview of duties and responsibilities of a Industrial Engineer 
  • Shadow and work with an experienced engineer on a variety of industrial equipment, projects and other automation systems

Guidelines for Academic Background

  • Industrial Engineering Major (other engineering or technical degree path may be accepted).
  • At least 40 hours coursework completed towards Bachelor's degree with at least 12 hours required coursework in chosen major
  • Grade Point Average at least 2.8 (on 4 point scale)
  • No work experience in metallurgical or mining field required
  • Very strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • A strong work ethic is required.
