2018 Summer Mine Engineer Internship

The Doe Run Company's Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Division (SEMO), located near Viburnum, MO (in the heart of the Mark Twain National Forest), is responsible for locating and extracting lead ore. The work takes place far below Earth's surface, some 1,000 feet beneath the forested hills of southern Missouri. This area, rich in mineral deposits, is known as the Viburnum Trend. Named for the nearby town of Viburnum, mining and milling has taken place here for morethan 40 years. Today, approximately 70 percent of the United States' primary lead supply comes from SEMO's six mines in Missouri, limiting the country's dependence on foreign sources. While best known for having high-purity lead ore, SEMO also extracts zinc and copper minerals from its underground mines.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the internship students will have a clear understanding of the mine engineering profession as it relates to the mining and milling industry in general and Doe Run in particular.  Students will come away with solid experience in the field, especially in the areas of scaling processes, blasting processes, ground support, underground support, haulage, and surveying.

Work Plan

  • Job shadowing with an experienced mining engineer learning how our tech service engineers apply engineering principles to real world situations.
  • Assignment of individual project in which results will be presented by intern to the executive and leadership team
  • Learning how we handle our scaling processes through hands on job training and working with our experienced miners hand scaling.
  • Learning the techniques of how we blast, our blasting patterns and the different types of blasting agents that we use and their effects.
  • Working with an experienced roof bolter operator to gain knowledge of ground support.
  • Working with an underground utility crew including some shaft bottom time learning about ventilation, mine power, and drainage applications.
  • At least one day will be spent riding with haul truck operators as experience for future equipment evaluation tasks.
  • At least one day will be spent helping a survey crew, gaining knowledge of this critical function in order to keep mine maps up to date and the mines moving in the proper direction.
  • Order of assignments will depend on operational needs
  • Assignments may vary from this plan depending on business needs at the time.
